Britain's most decorated female Olympian, Laura Kenny has announced her retirement form cycling.

The five-time Olympic gold medallist announced her retirement on Monday despite previously targeting her fourth Olympics in Paris this year.

The 31-year-old decided to call time on her illustrious career just seven months after giving birth to her second child in July of last year as British cycling bosses rated her return to the sport as 'slim'.

Dame Laura posted photos and videos of her cycling career on social media to announce her decision to leave the sport she loves so dearly, writing, 'Thank you cycling for everything you’ve given me - including a husband and our growing family!'

Here at Mail Sport we have taking a look back at every medal, the Essex native won throughout her 14 year long glittering career, including a deeper look at her most impressive wins.

Kenny hit British stardom during her impressive showing at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Already a three time world champion at the time, Kenny became a household name and cycling icon when she claimed two gold medals at her home Olympics.

Gold - 2012 London - Team pursuit

Although Kenny already had a cycling career worth gloating about, the Essex cyclist had yet to win the one medal most athletes dream of, a medal at the Olympics.

Kenny won her first Olympic medal at her first showing at the games. The then 20-year-old won her first medal in the Team pursuit with partners Joanna Rowsell and Dani Rowe.

Gold for the girls seemed inevitable at the time as leading up to the final race, including pre-Olympic races and the event itself, the ladies had broke the world record for the event six times.

They managed to complete the event in a time of three minutes 15.669 seconds in qualifying, they then reduced the time by another second in the first round, and before winning the gold in a time of 3:14.051.

Gold - 2012 London - Omnium

What started it all for Kenny... and the catalyst for her becoming Britain's most accomplished female Olympian, was a day after the team pursuit, Kenny, formerly Trott was back on the track to compete as an individual in the Omnium.

She managed to impress from the off, leading the event after day one, having won both the flying lap and elimination race but only placed tenth in the points race.

Despite pressure from American cyclist, Sarah Hammer who nosed her way in front after the individual pursuit and and the scratch race, Trott won the closing time trial to claim her first individual Olympic gold.
