NRL bad boy Todd Carney has revealed the time he was attacked on the footy field by a very unlikely assailant while playing bush footy during his time banned from first grade.

Carney was a prodigious talent that cracked into the NRL as a teenager with the Canberra Raiders in 2006, but his exploits off the field dulled his electric talent on it.

Carney had been sacked by Canberra in 2008 after allegedly urinating on a patron's head at a Canberra nightclub, banned from his home town of Goulburn for a year and warned by a magistrate that he was headed for jail if his alcohol-fueled indiscretions kept mounting up.

Carney was then de-registered by the NRL and was not be eligible to compete in the competition until 2010.

That led to Mick Nasser, the owner of the Barron Valley Hotel in Atherton, giving the wayward star a lifeline.

Carney moved to the regional town in far north Queensland, learned how to pull a beer and work a bar and played for the local team the Atherton Roosters for the 2009 season.
