Two Portsmouth fans reportedly spread human ashes on the Fratton Park pitch during the club's League One title celebrations - causing damage to the surface.
Thousands of jubilant Pompey fans raced onto the pitch after a 3-2 win over Barnsley on April 16 took the club up into the Championship.
While the majority celebrated with the players and their fellow supporters, the BBC reported that two took advantage of the chaos to conduct their own ceremony.
But because human ashes contain calcium and calcium phosphate - which kill grass - the ground staff had to perform urgent repairs ahead of the home fixture with Wigan Athletic five days later.
The penalty area and centre circle were the affected areas, with scars visible once the crowd had dispersed, the BBC said.
