Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez claims the obsession with ball possession in modern football is misguided, and simply does not translate into goal chances.
Uruguay beat Portugal 2-1 in Sochi despite possession of little more than 30 per cent.
In Saturday's other last-16 clash, France won 4-2 against Argentina who dominated possession of the ball.
Oscar Tavarez believes the obsession with possession-based tactics is misguided
Uruguay overcame Portugal 2-1 thanks to a brace from Edinson Cavani who went off injured
'There is very often this mistaken assumption that ball possession leads to scoring opportunities,' said 71-year-old Tabarez.
'In South Africa in 2010 we did very well and reached the semi-finals but only South Africa themselves had less ball possession than us.
'Even if you don't have much ball possession you can still inflict yourself on opponents in different ways.
'But you have to be very strong in defence and have good individual quality and skill in the defensive line.
'We will always choose the plan that is best for us.'
