The app car2go has temporarily suspended operations in Chicago after dozens of people allegedly defrauded the short-term rental site and stole as many as 100 Mercedes-Benz sedans and other high-end cars, it has been reported.
At least 12 people were in police custody as of Wednesday night for allegedly using stolen or missing cars to commit crimes, WBBM-TV reported.
Authorities are investigating how the car2go users managed to manipulate the app in order to steal the cars.
The company denied on Wednesday that its systems were hacked, saying that users’ information was never compromised.
The company tweeted: ‘Clarification: We were not hacked.
