Australian au-pair stabbed on London Bridge had turned back to see what happened

Australian woman Julie Wallace has told an inquest in the UK how 'every sliding door slid' for her daughter Sara Zelenak to be murdered in the London Bridge terror attacks two years ago.

The 21-year-old, fellow Australian Kirsty Boden and six others died when Khuram Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba used a van to run down people on the bridge before stabbing others with kitchen knives in nearby Borough Market on the night of June 3, 2017.

Ms Wallace told an inquest at the Old Bailey in London on Tuesday that Ms Zelenak had been looking forward to meeting her and her stepfather Mark Wallace in Paris before she was killed.

But there was to be no Paris rendezvous as a chain of events led to her daughter's stabbing death.

'On that fatal night, every sliding door slid for Sara to be in harm's way,' Ms Wallace said.

'At 10pm Sara's phone rang and her friend said "I've finished at the rugby" and so she left her safe haven at the Grind hotel and walked out into a terrorist attack and was stabbed to death,' Ms Wallace said.

England and Wales Chief Coroner Mark Lucraft QC described how Ms Zelenak, a live-in au pair, had been walking down a nearby street with her friend when they heard the sound of the crash.
