Some patients reported almost losing their hearing after several operations, while another suffered paralysis of half his face – which now droops.

A young girl underwent a number of ear operations even though it was later discovered there was no chance of her condition improving, The Herald Sun reported.

Von Marburg's trail of complications has been well-documented.
