A gunman is understood to have killed four people and injured several others at a college Halloween party at an Airbnb in California.

Police were summoned at around 11pm on Thursday to Lucille Way, Orinda County, where around 100 young people had been partying in a rented property.

At least four were killed and others wounded in the shooting, according to KTVU.

Witnesses said the students at the party were from Laney College, NBC reported.

The event had been advertised on Instagram as an 'AirBNB mansion
