Former prime minister John Howard has described Scott Morrison's handling of the bushfire crisis as compassionate and empathetic.

Australia's second-longest serving PM, who turned 80 last year, has sprung to the defence of the Liberal leader as the worst natural disaster in living memory destroys millions of hectares in New South Wales and Victoria.

With 25 people now dead, Mr Howard declared Mr Morrison had done everything right.

'The last thing you could ever say about Scott Morrison is that he lacks compassion and empathy,' he told Sky News on Tuesday.

'I've always found him somebody who looks to people as individuals and cares about the human impact on individuals and their families.

'A lot of the criticism is completely misplaced, I think he's done all the right things.'

A pregnant woman Zoey Salucci-McDermott, 20, was last week visibly upset when Mr Morrison grabbed her hand, after she had refused to shake it.

She later explained she was upset at the PM walking away as she pleaded for his government to boost funding to the Rural Fire Service, which is NSW government-run.

This week Paul Parker, an exhausted RFS firefighter from Nelligen, on the South Coast, asked a 7News crew to 'tell the Prime Minister to go and get f***ed' before collapsing on the ground.

Mr Morrison's political woes started before Christmas when he holidayed in Hawaii as fires burned in on the NSW Mid-North Coast and southern Queensland.

Australians on holiday posted to social media images of Mr Morrison and his wife Jenny at Waikiki Beach in Honolulu.
