Firefighters are tackling a blaze at an oil refinery cooling tower in Los Angeles after explosions sent huge fireballs and 100ft flames into the sky. 

The fire erupted at the Marathon Refinery in Carson on Tuesday at around 10:50pm and quickly tore through the structure. 

Locals reported hearing a several loud 'booms' that rattled windows and shook cars more than two miles away. 

Footage shows enormous flames and thick smoke billowing into the night sky as fire crew douse the inferno with water.

Crew from the Los Angeles County Fire Department are still battling the inferno as the oil refinery's system is being depressurized. 

No injuries have been reported. The 405 Freeway was shut down on both directions but reopened within an hour, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Those living nearby have been forced keep their windows and doors shut from thick smoke. The area has not yet needed to be evacuated. 

Resident Pricilla Reyes told NBC Los Angeles that she heard 'four or five explosions loud explosions'.
