A sixth person has tested positive for coronavirus at the Tenerife hotel where British holidaymakers have been trapped.

But authorities say the person is not linked to the Italian group that sparked the lockdown and refused to reveal the sex and nationality of the new patient.

They are now trying to work out how infection could have occurred. The new patient is not showing any of the classic symptoms of the virus but has been transferred to hospital to be quarantined.

It came as Britons cleared of infection were free to leave and landed at Manchester airport last night.

Five Italians from the hotel are already in isolation in hospital, including the doctor who sparked the alert at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace in the south of Tenerife.

A spokesman for the regional health authority confirmed yesterday evening: 'This latest case is a guest at the hotel who was being monitored but does not belong to the initial group of Italians.
