What's been the worst photo you've seen on Instagram?

There are so many candidates for this coveted title that I'm only surprised there isn't now a Shameful Selfie awards ceremony, not least because all the perpetrators would definitely attend 'for the gram' such is their shocking lack of self-awareness.

You could even lower the winners through a trapdoor on stage into a pool of ravenous sharks and they'd still view it as a price worth paying for going viral.

A popular humorous website called 'Runt Of The Web' records some of the most deplorable outrages perpetrated on Instagram.

As it says: 'What happens when you mix unbridled narcissism with unyielding stupidity and millions of teenagers willing to document every moment of their life? Why, the worst Instagram pictures ever.'

Their list of shame includes a photo of a grim-faced old lady lying in a hospital bed being peppered with $100 bills by two of her grandchildren.

'My sister and I visiting my nana at #stanfordhospital,' reads the caption, 'making her happy by making it rain with #hundreds.

The poor woman doesn't look happy at all – she looks horrified.

Others on the list include a young woman posting a photo of her badly gashed and openly bleeding leg right after she was knifed in a fight, with the words: 'Talk about a rough Monday lol #stabbed #cantfeelmyleg.'

It's those letters 'lol' that ironically made one laugh out loud, but in shocked revulsion not hilarity.

Rivera has 84,800 Instagram followers, and 307,000 on Tik-Tok. So, she is a popular 'influencer.' But it would be fair to say her ghoulish photos went down like a cup of cold vomit, even among her biggest fans

One fan said that it was 'the most horrific Instagram post' they'd ever seen. I agree. There's something so utterly and repellently distasteful about a young woman exploiting her father's dead body for 'likes' as he literally lies dead behind her

But it would be fair to say her ghoulish photos went down like a cup of cold vomit, even among her biggest fans. 'Jayne, delete these pics, apologize for your lack of discretion or I will stop following you and I hope others will do the same,' one commented. 'This is a hard unfollow. God rest that man's soul,' said another. Others accused her of being 'sick', 'vile' and 'disgusting.' And one said simply that it was 'the most horrific Instagram post' they'd ever seen. I agree. My further research into some of the other most heinous Instagram photo crimes unearthed a woman stomping all over expensive rare plants in a conservatory despite repeatedly being asked to stop by furious staff.

Another posted a photo of herself in a skimpy bikini by a rice field with the words: 'Thinking about how different my life is from the man picking in the rice field every morning.'

A third posted a photo of herself in a leotard bending herself into shapes at the Berlin Holocaust memorial with the words: 'Yoga is connection with everything around us.'

Think this kind of thing is unusual?

Auschwitz Memorial had to plea for visitors not to pose for grinning Instagram photos at the scene of the horrendous Holocaust camp, or post pictures of themselves balancing on the railway tracks that led millions of Jews to their slaughter.

Some influencers – the word used for those Instagram users whose antics and post 'inspire' others - will even risk their own death 'for the gram'.

Sri Lankan officials issued a warning after a backpacking couple posted photos of themselves kissing as they hung off one of the country's famous speeding 'blue trains' while it crossed a bridge where one false move would have led to their certain demise.

And others are quite happy to risk public opprobrium by hijacking terrible disasters if it shows off their hot bodies or flogs their products.

After last year's catastrophic Malibu fires, a host of Instagram influencers posted photos of themselves wearing very little clothing and promoting their wares to…ahem…. 'show support', ensuring maximum attention for their narcissistic self-promotion by including a host of fire-related hashtags.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought out the worst in many of these selfish wastrels as they raced to post photos of themselves ignoring rules and partying as everyone else was locked down.

Some influencers are just plain creepy like the infamous Ingham Family, who have 1.2 million followers and sold life-like replica dolls of their own four-month- old baby Jace.

And of course, many celebrities are equally shameless, especially when it comes to virtue-signalling.

Kim Kardashian and Emily Radajowski posted topless bird-flipping photos to supposedly promote feminism, and Kim's sister Kendall Jenner 'ended police brutality' with that infamous Pepsi commercial Instagram post, prompting Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. to share her own iconic photo on Twitter of her father confronting the police during an American Civil Rights Movement, with the sarcastic caption: 'If only Daddy would have known about the power of #Pepsi.'
