Cleo Smith kidnap: Terry Kelly winks at cameras as he is taken to jail

This is the moment the man accused of abducting Cleo Smith from a campsite in Western Australia and then keeping her captive for 18 days winked as he was put on a plane to jail after appearing in court for the first time.

Terence Darrell Kelly, 36, was photographed walking barefoot and in shackles across the tarmac at Carnarvon airport on Thursday afternoon as police bundled him aboard a plane bound for the regional capital of Perth.

Awaiting him there will be a cell in a maximum security jail where he will languish for at least a month until he returns to court for the next phase of his trial, scheduled to begin on December 6.

Escorted by half a dozen special operations officers, Kelly turned to the cameras and winked just before boarding the twin-engine Cessna 441 - apparently relishing the attention after he shouted 'I'm coming for you' at journalists in court moments earlier.

Kelly faces two counts including 'forcibly taking or enticing a child' over the kidnap of four-year-old Cleo, who was taken from a tent where she was sleeping with her family on October 16 before being found in the early hours of November 3, locked inside a bedroom at Kelly's Carnarvon home.

Cleo's family thank police and public for their 'love and support'

Cleo Smith's family have thanked police and the 'love and support' they have received from across Australia in an emotional statement after the four-year-old's incredible rescue.

Her mother Ellie Smith and stepfather Jake Gliddon said they were 'humbled' by the public response to Cleo's disappearance 18 days ago and the amazing discovery of the little girl in a locked Carnarvon house in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The heart-warming statement added that Cleo's parents are 'so thankful that our little girl is back within our arms'.

'We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in the rescue of our daughter Cleo Smith,' the couple said in a statement on Friday evening.

'In particular, we would like to thank WA Police, all those involved in the initial search, the Carnarvon community, local businesses and of course our family and friends.

'We are humbled by the love and support that we have received from not only our local community but the whole of Western Australia and across the country.

'We are so thankful that our little girl is back within our arms and our family is whole again.

'As we try to get on with our lives, we ask that you respect our privacy.'

As the flight left the small town on the country's west coast, locals within the largely isolated community are continuing to piece together a picture of Kelly and how he came to be at the centre of one of the nation's most shocking crimes.

Described as a 'loner', Kelly lived by himself in a well-known government housing precinct, and was also a regular at Carnarvon Central - a retail hub and meeting place in the centre of town - according to one shop-owner.

Denham French, who relocated to Carnarvon from Thailand seven years ago, operates a sporting goods store which also sells some clothing and jewelry. Kelly, he says, would come in 'from time to time' and was relatively well-known in the area.

'He's a guy who would flow in and out,' says French. 'Sometimes he would come in a few times a week. Other times none at all.'

French admits one detail in the shocking kidnapping case which came as a surprise to him and others was the revelation that Kelly lived alone - something almost unheard of in Tonkin Crescent and the surrounding commission areas where extended families often live together.

It's understood Kelly, who was raised by his late grandmother, has one aunty believed to be living in Carnarvon but she is yet to be identified.

Another unusual detail, he says, is that Kelly was able to remain undetected for so long.

'Because he lived in what you would call an extremely communal area,' Mr French said. 'Everyone knows everyone. The people are communal but they're also transient.

'So they move around and yet they stay close to their communities. 'The idea that the neighbours knew nothing...that is probably the most surprising thing of all.'

Locals are also trying to reconcile the Kelly they knew in-person with the unsettling character that has been revealed through his social media profiles which detailed his obsession with girls' toys - particularly Bratz fashion dolls - and which contained references to invented family members including children.

Aside from posts in which he poses with Bratz dolls and shows off a room full of toys in his house, Kelly also made cryptic posts about privacy and online safety - including one posted at 5am the day Cleo vanished.

'I can't accept friend requests from strangers... I live a private life and I respect those who are on my friend list to ensure their privacy is respected too,' his Facebook status read. 'Us adults have to be careful online too.'

The post explained he would not become 'mates' with people just because they know his family or other friends.

One of Kelly's Facebook profiles was also following Ellie Smith, Cleo's mother. It is unclear when exactly the pair connected online - whether before or after Cleo's disappearance - but Ellie used the profile to appeal for information on her missing daughter during the search operation, posts which Kelly would likely have seen.

His online activity shows he interacted with news stories about missing Cleo, posting a 'sad' reaction face to one.

One neighbour also told how he saw Kelly during the days when Cleo was missing driving around with toy dolls in his car. Henry Dodd said the brand new dolls were still in their packaging 'as if they had been collected from the post office'.

'There were around ten or twelve dolls... and it looked like he had picked them up after they were delivered somewhere,' he told Daily Mail Australia.

Kelly attended East Carnarvon High School before transferring to Carnarvon Senior, but even then didn't make any significant or lasting friendships.

Soon after his grandmother's death in 2020, Kelly appeared to come into some money and bought himself a late-model Mazda.

'He used to park it in the driveway and then close the gate, every day, always went and put the car in the same spot and closed the gate,' one of his neighbours recalled.

Daily Mail Australia can reveal Kelly was pulled over in June 2021 and charged with driving unlicensed.

The court heard he had never held a licence and had no authority to be behind the wheel of a car.

In recent weeks, more townspeople began noticing Kelly using the car. Pricilla Milly-Milly said she saw him at the hardware store Bunnings just last week, PerthNow reported.

'He was in the car and he just kept staring at me,' she said.

The car was reportedly crucial to the case detectives were building against Kelly, and they used tracking technology on his phone to help trace his movements in the weeks Cleo was missing.

Ms Milly-Milly remarked that he 'never let anyone into his house' even though they had been neighbours for such a long time.

Social media posts allegedly made by Kelly emerged showing rooms full of Bratz dolls and princesses.

It's understood he had multiple aliases online where he would join doll collector's groups to discuss his beloved toys.

Max March who owns and operates the Toyworld where Kelly allegedly purchased many of the dolls he was so fascinated with, stopped short of discussing the accused in detail saying only that Cleo's safe return had been a huge relief to residents.

'It has been a tough time for an awful lot of people,' said March.

Asked if he was working with police as part of their investigation March said; 'I really can't say.'
