Beachgoers across Australia are desperately trying to avoid a 'gobsmacking abundance' of bluebottle jellyfish as the notorious stingers experience an explosion in numbers.

Feared for their painful sting, huge amounts of the marine creatures have been spotted down Tasmania's east coast, along the NSW coast, in parts of Victoria and some areas of South Australia.

Biologist and jellyfish expert Dr Lisa-ann Gershwin said the jellyfish 'armadas' are cropping due to strong north-easterly winds and Cyclone Seth.
