Daniel Andrews has resisted growing calls from medical experts to reinstate indoor mask mandates as the state braces for a chilly winter ahead - and says if Victoria does the decision will be made by the state's chief health officer.
Victoria has recorded 107 Covid-related deaths in the last week, including 20 on Tuesday alone to make up almost a third of the daily national death toll.
The grim statistic is on top of a renewed spike in daily infections to five-digit figures, which sparked warnings from the Australian Medical Association to wear masks in indoor settings such supermarkets, theatres, halls and stadiums.
But one month after masks were scrapped in schools, retail and hospitality, a defiant Victorian Premier says he has no plans to reintroduce the dreaded rule.
