A man has been charged with the murder of his 89-year-old grandmother after she was found stabbed to death in her own flat.

Verushan Manoharan, 31, is accused of killing Sakunthala Francis after she was discovered with knife wounds at around 9.20pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics rushed to the flat in Thornton Heath, south London, and discovered the pensioner, then called police when she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Manoharan was arrested later that evening in nearby Croydon, south London, and charged with murder last night.
