Neonatal nurse Lucy Letby took hand and foot print photos of a baby she now stands accused of murdering, a jury at Manchester Crown Court was told today.

She also cut a lock of hair from Baby A in the hours after his death in the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital in Cheshire.

The revelations are made in some of the scores of text messages she shared with colleagues following the infant's 'sudden and unexpected' collapse on June 8, 2015.

An analysis of her internet use also revealed that she carried out repeated Facebook searches on Baby A's mother – the first of them at 9.58am the morning after his death.

The neonatal nurse, 32, is accused of murdering seven newborn children and the attempted murder of a further ten during an alleged killing spree between June 2015 and June 2016 while working in a neonatal unit.

Two of the infants, twins Baby A and Baby B, were born within a minute of each other at the Countess of Chester Hospital, Cheshire, on June 7, 2015.

Letby is said to have murdered Baby A by injecting air into his bloodstream on June 8. The nurse is also accused of attempting to kill his twin sister by the same method during the following night shift.

The court today heard analysis of Letby's internet usage showed she carried out repeated Facebook searches of Baby A's mother just hours after the infant's collapse.

At the same time, she was also being consoled by colleagues, with Letby telling one nurse: 'It was awful. He died very suddenly and unexpectedly just after handover. Not sure why. It's gone to the coroner. They are querying a clotting problem. Very sad.'

Referring to the end of her own shift earlier the same day, the colleague responded: 'Oh God, he was doing really well when I left.'

Letby then told her: 'Just collapsed very suddenly. Awful. He had really good day on Monday then I took over Monday night'.

The colleague expressed sympathy that Letby was on duty at the time, adding: 'I'm sorry it happened when you were taking care of him. You're not having a good run at the moment.'

Letby replied: 'I wasn't supposed to be in either. But these things happen unfortunately.'

The nurse also said the parents of Baby A and Baby B had been 'beside themselves' over worries they would also lose their infant daughter.
