Scenes at the Melbourne Cup didn't disappoint this year with glamorous attendees partying well into the early hours of Wednesday morning in celebration of the race that stops a nation.

The biggest event on Australia's racing calendar attracted a lively crowd who lived it up trackside with a drink and a punt before kicking on at post-race festivities in Sydney, Melbourne, and across the country.

Here is a wrap-up of some of the greatest moments from the 2022 Melbourne Cup - some of the best (and worst) photos you won't be forgetting until the next iconic race day rolls around.

Punters in Melbourne and Sydney made sure to keep the good times rolling as celebrations started to wind-down at Flemington and Randwick - with one brazen attendee choosing to lose his shirt entirely.

A crowd of confused revellers formed around the young man as he ditched his dress shirt and made the ill-advised decision to turn the damp turf into his personal slip-and-slide during a hail storm.

Photos show the man running at speed before hitting the ground hard and sliding to the amusement of his mates, who cheered the jokester on while others recorded the gaff on their phones.

One woman was also pictured making her friends laugh as they attempted to depart race celebrations in Sydney, as she clung to a male companion and nearly sent him toppling into a nearby hedge.

Revellers were in high spirits in Sydney as one race-goer narrowly avoided being pushed into a hedge by his female companion before she planted a kiss on another man in a dark suit

The well-dressed reveller almost suffered a wardrobe malfunction as she steadied herself and planted a kiss on another man as the group finally made their way to post-race festivities.

Festivities were far from over as the clock struck midnight on Tuesday as women skolled beers on the street while other loved-up couples took the opportunity to steal a romantic smooch under the stars.

However, not everybody's evening ended to plan, with one shoeless woman left slumped face-down on the pavement before she was hauled to her feet by another Melbourne Cup attendee.

Revellers in Melbourne shivered through the coldest Cup Day since 1995 with many forced to ruin their expensive outfits with the daggy addition of a jacket, poncho or umbrella.

One woman in a bright pink raincoat took a well-deserved perch on her friend's lap while another man appeared to muddy the back of his beige jacket after perhaps falling, or tumbling on to the wet grass.

Those who made it to the end of race day in Melbourne were rewarded with a stunning rainbow that stretched over the entire track - with punters naturally taking it as a sign to have a dance on the turf.
