Queen Elizabeth's former Jaguar X Type - her 'second favourite vehicle' has sold at auction for more than £43,000.

The regency green 2009 estate car has a barley leather interior and was first owned by HM the Queen, often pictured driving it out of Windsor Castle.

While the late monarch's favourite motor was said to be her Landrover Defender, the Jag is believed to have been a 'close second'.

In one set of photos advertising the car, the Queen can be seen driving up Windsor's Long Walk, looking 'happy and healthy' in a pink floral hat.

The motor, which has 72,500 miles on the clock, was fitted with a powerful 3.0 litre V6 228 bhp engine capable of 146mph.

It went under the hammer with an extensive history file detailing its royal provenance for £38,000 at Historics of Iver, Bucks, with added fees taking the total paid to £43,400.

James Good, specialist at Historics, said: 'What a thrill it has been to offer Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's Jaguar for sale.

'We are absolutely delighted, as I am sure the new owner is. It's an immensely collectible car.
