The attorney for actor Alec Baldwin has shockingly claimed that the gun the actor used when he fatally shot cinematographer Haylna Hutchins on the set of the movie Rust was destroyed by New Mexico's state government.

Alex Spiro dropped the bombshell in the case during a hearing conducted virtually and streamed on YouTube by the court Thursday. Prosecutors did not respond to or refute Spiro's claim.

'I think I should tell the court that the firearm in this case, that's a great subject of it, was destroyed by the state,' Spiro said. 'So that's obviously an issue.'

Spiro added that he'd like to be able to take a look at 'what's left of' the firearm, if there is anything.

The October 2021 incident occurred in a church building at the Bonanza Creek Ranch near Santa Fe, New Mexico when Baldwin's gun fired, with the bullet killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.
