Natalie Barr has blasted the Albanese government's response to the cost of living pressures affecting millions of Australians as 'not good enough'.

The Sunrise host read out a heartbreaking letter from a 55-year-old mum doing it tough on the show on Wednesday morning to Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil.

'I eat the leftover food from my child's meal if there is any left, or I don't eat,' the woman wrote.

'I wait at the school car park from drop-off until pick up because I have not enough fuel. I've sold most of my clothes so that I can afford my kid's (clothes).'

A visibly moved Barr then looked to Ms O'Neil as she demanded answers from her.

'This is Australia currently. That's not good enough, is it?' she said.

Ms O'Neil said she 'absolutely understands' the mum's difficulties and that there are 'people across my community who ... are experiencing these exact type of problems.

'The reason that I went into politics is to try to support and help families like this,' she said.

Ms O'Neil said the Government was hampered in how much it could do due to fears of further fuelling inflation.

'The issue for the government at the moment is ... to help families in this situation, but we cannot add to the inflation problem, which is like an additional tax on all those households.'
