A young farmer searching for a missing cow died after she was crushed by her quad bike.

Samantha Bunting was discovered by a colleague following the accident near Castle Douglas, Kirkcudbrightshire, with the emergency services pronouncing her dead at the scene.

A fatal accident inquiry at Dumfries Sheriff Court heard that the 21-year-old lost control of her vehicle after hitting a small ridge.

She was thrown off the bike before it landed on top of her and crushed her upper body. The cause of death was recorded as mechanical asphyxia due to a quad bike accident.

Sheriff Colm Dempsey found there were no precautions which could reasonably have been taken that might realistically have resulted in the death being avoided.

He further found no defects in any work system which contributed to the tragedy.
