Mazeer Malik was just about to shut up shop in Leeds, West Yorkshire, when the masked robbers struck.
As his shopfront was destroyed by an old car used by the gang as a battering ram he grabbed the 18ins long bat he kept behind the counter for emergencies.
His shop is set in a small jewellery section of the busy Harehills Road where fellow traders say they are living in fear of robbery due to policing cuts.

The attack happened as many of the shops on the road were closing for the night but the area was still busy with shoppers.
The middle aged woman who recently opened a dress shop next door said: 'I am still shaking with fear. It was so scary.
'I heard an almighty bang. It was like an earthquake. The whole of my shop shook. I looked outside and could not believe what was happening.'
