A rare first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone with several spelling misprints in it has sold for £56,000.

The book went up for auction yesterday in New York, and had been originally tipped to sell from £64,000.

Only 500 copies of the debut Harry Potter novel were printed in its first release, with 300 given to libraries and schools and 200 to private parties.

The select copies all contain the same typos - including the words "one wand" printed twice on a list of items Harry needs for Hogwarts on page 53.

Meanwhile, author JK Rowling's name was accidentally listed in the novels as "Joanne Rowling."

The book, which originally retailed for £10.99, was consigned by a prominent Harry Potter collector at auctioneers Bonhams New York in the United States.

A Bonhams New York spokesperson said: 'This is a first edition, first printing of the book that gave life to the beloved wizard of Hogwarts.

They added: 'It has created a cultural phenomenon that continues today.'
