A young Aussie forced to move back into the family home has blamed the rental crisis for stopping her generation from getting ahead and owning a home.

Gemma Upson-McPike, 27, said moving in with her parents had been her only option after her landlord increased her rent from $390 to $450 a week.

The fitness trainer has lived in the 'small' one-bedroom apartment in the Melbourne suburb of Malvern for three years and initially paid $280 a week.

'I am nearly 27 years old, and today, I am moving back in with my parents. This is not the plan I had for 27-year-old me, but this is just how bad the rental crisis is at the moment,' Ms Upson-McPike raged on social media.

The young Aussie said her rental was 'not worth' $450 a week and that despite the high rent, there were cracks in the walls and no laundry facilities.

'What are people supposed to do?' she said.

'I'm so lucky and I'm so grateful that I can move back in with my parents, but not everyone can do that so what's your alternative? Like your homeless?

'This is why my generation can't get ahead, this is why we can't buy houses.'

Ms Upson-McPike said she was '99 per cent sure' her landlord had paid off the mortgage for her place and had two investment properties.
