Two women are in critical condition after a head-on collision Saturday on Highway 112 in Rougemont, about 50 kilometres east of Montreal.

According to preliminary information gathered by the Sûreté du Québec, a driver headed west on Route 112 drove into the oncoming lane just after 5 p.m. and collided with the vehicle carrying the two victims.

The driver who changed lanes was taken to hospital, but her life is not considered in danger. The lone passenger in her car was uninjured. Police did not know yet why the car moved into the oncoming lane.

Highway 112 was closed Saturday evening while officers investigate the scene.
