Tony Abbott has accused Paul Keating of fabricating claims Prince Charles wants Australia to become a republic.

Former Labor Prime Minister Keating, in office from 1991 to 1996, wrote in a British newspaper on Sunday: 'I have no doubt he believes Australia should be free of the British monarchy and that it should make its own way in the world.'

Today former PM Abbott, a stanch monarchist, tweeted: 'Prince Charles would just want to do his duty and he shouldn't be verballed by an ex-PM'.
