Mr Matthews’ declaration during Thursday’s episode of Hardball with Chris Matthews saw him declare that impeachment was “behind schedule”. The talk show host pointed out several examples of why the US President should be indicted by Congress. One of his examples included when Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to drop his investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and then firing Mr Comey for refusing to drop the investigation. Mr Matthews suggested now the Democrats have taken over the House of Representatives, they have the power to impeach Trump.

He stated now is the time to impeach rather than waiting two more years to find a “cherry" on top.

Mr Matthews said: "Some argue that the push for impeachment is ahead of schedule, I think a stronger argument should be made that it's way behind schedule.”

The United States Constitution allows the House of Representatives to have sole power to impeach an official.

The Senate has the authority to then hold impeachment trials to determine whether or not to remove someone from office.
