Huge plumes of thick black smoke can be seen pouring out of the former coke ovens in South Bank. Cleveland Police has confirmed there have been two casualties from the incident. At this stage the force is unable to confirm the extent of the injuries. The site has now been evacuated with a 150 metre cordon in place.
A police spokesman said: “Officers were called to a report of a fire on site at the former SSI site.
“The site has been evacuated whilst emergency services deal with the incident and a cordon has been put in place up to 150 metres from the site.
