Diana and Charles were thought to have the fairytale wedding when they married back in 1981. However, only a few years down the line, cracks began to show and they went through a prolonged and public breakup. They divorced in 1996 after four years of public spats and two shocking, tell-all interviews. Yet through it all, Diana maintained that she truly loved her husband.
Writing in the Daily Mail in 2003, royal expert Richard Kay explained how Diana’s closest friend Lucia Flecha de Lima said: “She often told how happy they were in the beginning, especially after William was born and how they bathed him together.”
The friend also said Diana once told Charles: “I will love you for ever.”
However, in the BBC Radio 5 Live 2017 series, ‘Images of Diana’, presenter Natasha Kaplinsky looked into the nature of their relationship. She asked: “Did they have much in common?”
Diana’s biographer Sarah Bradford replied: “Really very little indeed. They really weren’t suited at all.”
Ms Kaplinsky commented: “Nevertheless he was the future King of England and she must have idolised him.”

Ms Bradford responded: “Well she certainly did. All through her life I think she loved him.”
Ms Kaplinsky asked: “She said that right the way through didn’t she? But going back to the point about being in love, she didn’t really have a yardstick to compare it with did she?
“She was an absolute beginner in the world of love. And so how would se really know if she loved or not?”
Ms Bradford commented: “Seriously, I suppose she couldn’t know. It was a caricature of a teenager’s, really.”
Diana was only 19 when the 32-year-old Prince of Wales proposed.
