Diana Gabaldon has remained tight-lipped regarding the importance of Jamie’s (played by Sam Heughan) ghost but has openly addressed his age - 25 - and that he will appear after the Outlander series has ended. Fans have been speculating for years about the importance of the ghost and it seems he may be involved in a heartbreaking final act.

Teasing more details about Jamie’s ghost, Diana hinted he will have “unfinished business” which may explain why he watches Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) before she travels back in time.

Could he be tasked with enticing Claire to the stones at Craigh Na Dun kick-starting a series of events that leads to them meeting?

Diana explained: “Presumably, he’s been relieved of the worst stuff by the process of dying.”

But it won’t just be his mortal sins which he will be relinquished of - anything he had left to finish up will also be resolved.

However, she added: “Assuming that he doesn’t have unfinished business at this point, which he might, you know.”

This will likely spark much more speculation about Jamie’s ghost from fans.
