Boris Johnson discusses future of coronavirus travel restrictions

Over the past week, cases of the Indian variant have nearly tripled across the country, according to figures from Public Health England. Surge testing is already taking place in areas including Bolton, Blackburn, London, Sefton and Nottingham.

Over the last seven days, Bolton saw a 97 percent jump in coronavirus cases, with the total number reaching 473 on Thursday.

Now, Dr Francis Andrews, the Bolton NHS Foundation Trust medical director, warned while the number of people in hospital is still low, there has been an increase between those aged 35 to 65.

He said: "Whilst the number of people in the hospital with Covid-19 is still currently low compared to previous peaks, we have seen a modest increase in patients admitted with confirmed Covid-19 over the last week.

"A small number are requiring intensive care.

"The increase in admissions is seen across the age range from 35-65.

"The majority of patients have not received a vaccination dose, but many would have been eligible."

Dr Andrews stressed how it is "essential" everyone who is offered the vaccine has it as it offers "excellent protections against" the virus.

The medical director added: “It is essential that everyone who is being offered the vaccine has it, as it offers excellent protection against Covid-19.
