Mr Rees-Mogg singled out an individual as he fired a direct warning to “stick to the Lancaster House speech”.
The Prime Minister’s speech in January revealed the Government’s position on leaving the single market, customs union, taking control of Britain’s borders and timing over the talks.
Speaking on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, the Tory MP said anyone vying for the top job would cause their “own chances a great deal of damage”.
Asked by presenter Nick Robinson who he was referring to, the MP for North East Somerset did not reveal a name.

He said: “I can only think in the Cabinet that there are a group of loyal and devoted people who are getting on with their job as they ought to be.
“We’re just speculating theoretically in case there was anybody who might be thinking about this and that person if he or she happens to be listening must realise that he would be doing his own chances a great deal of damage."
