The historically powerful storm is nearing the continental US, bringing maximum sustained wind speeds of 185mph.

Hurricane Harvey only reached wind speeds of 130mph at its peak, leading to fears Irma could cause more carnage than the storm that came before it.

Now the US President has signed emergency declarations for Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, which are at risk of being struck head on by Hurricane Irma.
