The EU chiefs claimed the Prime Minister had not been “honest” to the British public with the move to blue passports after Brexit.
Before Christmas, the British Government said that it would be reintroducing the blue passport once the UK had left the bloc, ditching the burgundy document.
As Manfred Weber, chair of the EPP Group, the largest political group in the European Parliament, began his swipe at Britain’s new passports, Mr Verhofstadt began to laugh.
Mr Weber said: “My message to London is please don’t complain anymore, please stop complaining please deliver. Give us an outlook about what you want to achieve for the future relationships.

“The most drastic example for the lack of leadership is probably the debate about the colour of the passports in Great Britain.
“Just before Christmas, Prime Minster May announced that after Brexit Britain would return to the blue passport. This would be to quote ‘an expression of the UK’s independence and sovereignty.
“The first problem in this respect is about honesty. The whole story is a scam.
