Matthew Hudson-Smith has revealed that he ghosted Noah Lyles, after the American star messaged him ahead of last night's 400m race. 

The Team GB star previously lived with the 100m Olympic champion and their brother Josephus in the United States and built a strong friendship, which led to Hudson-Smith being described as the 'third Lyles brother'. 

Hudson-Smith came agonisingly close on Wednesday night to picking up Team GB's first track and field gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

He raced away into the lead, but a brilliant late surge from Quincy Hall handed the gold medal to Lyles' American team-mate. Hudson-Smith broke down in tears after the race which he lost by just 0.04 seconds. 

Speaking to Eurosport this morning, the 29-year-old Brit was asked about his former house-mate.    

When asked if he has had any messages from Lyles, he responded: 'I'm going to see him after this probably. 

'He messaged me beforehand and it was well, I didn't read it because I was just so focussed with the task at hand. I still haven't had a chance to read it.'

When told that it's 'pretty big time' to ghost Lyles, he responded: 'I know, man.'

Eurosport presenter Orla Chennaoui then went on to explain how Hudson-Smith and Lyles know each other, and mentioned a bathroom habit that the American said the British star had when they lived together. 

Chennaoui said: 'We should explain that Matthew used to roommate with Noah Lyles, you shared a house in America. 

'He did say that one of the things he learned from his time living with you is that you don't wipe your feet when you leave the bathroom and so the carpet just outside the bathroom is always really wet. Have you learned to wipe your feet yet Matthew?'

Hudson-Smith joked: 'Why is he baiting me out, man? Nah I could bait him out so much but no, he's a global superstar guys, got to leave some mystery.'

Ahead of Wednesday's 400m race, Lyles said that he was 'voting' for Hudson-Smith to win the gold medal. 

Hudson-Smith moved to Florida in 2017 after deciding that he was getting complacent in England. 

He moved to the United States to train under Lance Brauman, who that same year, took on an up-and-coming 2016 US junior champion in Lyles.  

Telling the story of how Hudson-Smith moved into his house in Florida, he told the Press Association: 'Me and my brother bought a house. He didn't really want to do the apartment thing, and I was just like, 'Well, why don't you come and live with me and Josephus just for a little while? We have an extra room.'

'And he was like, 'oh yeah!' So he was living with us. I learned a lot about Matt in that one year. I learned that he does not like to wipe off his feet before he leaves the bathroom, so the carpet from the bathroom from his room is always going to be wet and he loves to cut it very, very close when leaving for practice.

'I also learned that at the end of the day he is just a goofy guy, he just likes to have fun. He's carefree. I remember his favourite saying, 'it is what it is', and I would always be like, 'what the heck does that mean, Matt?'

'I'm carefree but not to the point where I don't have any type of plan, and sometimes he'd just go out for hours. I'd be like, 'Where have you been?' and he'd go, 'Oh! I'm just walking around.'
