Hacks beat The Bear in a major upset for the top comedy honor as Shogun swept the board in record-breaking fashion for the drama categories at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards which featured a star-studded red carpet.
The HBO comedy starring Jean Smart - who earned Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series - and Hannah Einbinder ended the night on top with a win in the Outstanding Comedy Series category over the FX series at the gala event held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California on Sunday.
Meanwhile Shogun broke the all-time record for a single season of TV with 18 as the show not only earned top honor Outstanding Drama Series but also Outstanding Lead Actress and Actor In A Drama Series for Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, respectively.
When it came to the limited or anthology series categories, it was Netflix smash-hit Baby Reindeer which earned Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series in addition to Outstanding Lead Actor In A Limited Or Anthology Series for Richard Gadd and Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series for Jessica Gunning.
This year's ceremony was held less than a year after the 75th edition of the show which took place this past January after being moved back from its intended September 2023 date due to the writers and actors strikes.
Even aside from The Bear, Hacks triumphed over a very impressive field for Outstanding Comedy Series which also included Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Reservation Dogs, Only Murders in the Building, Palm Royale, and What We Do in the Shadows.
Showrunner, co-creator, and actor Paul W. Downs accepted the top prize for Hacks as he said: I have no thoughts in my brain. Thank you so much to the academy. Let's brace ourselves. I might get emotional. I have to say that we are so lucky to live our dream and make television. And we couldn't do it without our Hacks family.
'All of our writers, all of our cast, all of our crew who make our dreams come true literally. Look at the camera operators tonight doing incredible work making this happen. Thank you to the crew. Thank you. You know, when we pitch this show about two women, one of whom was over 60, we did not know if we would sell it. We really have to thank Casey boys and Sara, everyone who has helped us make this show. You know, there are about 20% of our population is over 60 plus, and there are only 3% of those characters on television. And I would like to see more of them because while I'm a great, young supporting actor, I really want to be a good, old lead.'
Fellow co-creator and showrunner Lucia Aniello took over the microphone to finish off the night by revealing they are back on set in just five days.
She said: 'Thank you so much. I mean, comedy is so important, obviously, to us. But we really feel like it can bridge divides when you laugh with someone and you have something in common with them. So please support comedy. It speaks true to power. It really does. So support your local comedian. And we have to go because we start shooting the next season in five days. So thank you and good night!'
The series explores a dark mentorship that forms between Deborah Vance, a legendary Las Vegas comedian, and an entitled, outcast 25-year-old.
It was shaping up to be a massive night for The Bear as the series was vying for a sweep of the comedy series acting categories but it did not happen as Ayo Edebiri was beat out by Hacks star Jean Smart in the Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series category earlier in the night.
In addition to Ayo, the 73-year-old Seattle-native also bested Quinta Brunson, Abbott Elementary, Selena Gomez, Only Murders in the Building, Kristen Wiig, Palm Royale, and Maya Rudolph, Loot.
During her acceptance speech the talented actress said: 'Oh, god. Thank you. Thank you so, so much. I -- it's very humbling, it really is. And I appreciate this because I just don't get enough attention. I'm serious. Okay. Anyway, no, thank you. I have so many, so many people to thank starting with our beautiful show runners.
'Thank you for thinking of me. I will never be able to thank you enough for thinking of me with this incredible role. And Casey and Sara and everybody at HBO. At Max-- I'm sorry. Just what we needed, another network.
'But, sorry, anyway, this is -- I'm going to honor tonight, my agent Scott Henderson of 30 plus years who is retiring and breaking my heart, the most amazing, cultured, tasteful, kind, funny man that never tried to talk me in or out of things I really didn't feel great about. I wish you all the best. He's going to bicycle through France because that's better than representing me? I don't know. Thank you. Thank you. I love you all. Thank you.'
In the series Jean portrays legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedian Deborah Vance who must co-exist with down-on-her-luck comedy writer Ava Daniels (portrayed by Hannah Einbinder) as she makes a career comeback.
Regardless of falling short in the top comedy category, The Bear earned early honors for stars Jeremy Allen White, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Liza Colón-Zayas.
The 33-year-old Brooklyn native Jeremy took home major honor in the Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series category for the second consecutive year.

Meanwhile, the 47-year-old New York native Ebon - who portrays Richie Jerimovich on the FX series - earned the win in the Outstanding Supporting Actor An A Comedy Series category for the second year much like Jeremy.
He beat out an impressive field including castmate Lionel Boyce in addition to Paul W. Downs, Hacks, Paul Rudd, Only Murders In The Building, Tyler James Williams, Abbott Elementary, and Bowen Yang, Saturday Night Live.
He kept his speech short and sweet as he said: 'Okay. Wow. Thank you so much. I don't know what to say. I'm so grateful for this show and to work with these beautiful people. Chris, thank you so much. I love you so much. Joanne that, Josh, Tyson. I work with this incredible family every day. It is such a privilege.
'Lionel, liza, Mattie, all my little forks crew, Andrew and Sara and Olivia. Thank you, Jeanie for putting such a nice family together. Thank you to my parents. They're taking such nice care of my cat. And thanks to my sweet daughters. Elena, I love you so much. You're everything to me. Thank you.'
Ebon's character Richard 'Richie' Jermovich is the de facto manager of the restaurants in The Bear who has a contentious relationship with Carmy due to his relationship with the chef's late older brother Michael.
The wins kept coming for the critically-acclaimed series as Liza Colón-Zayas took home Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series.

She was emotional during her acceptance speech as she said: 'Thank you for lowering the microphone for me. Thank you so much. Thank you so my husband, David Zayas. He told me to write a speech, and I didn't because I didn't think it would be possible. '
Liza recognized her fellow nominees as she continued her speech: 'How, how could I have thought it would be possible to be in the presence of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett and Janelle? Anyway, I love you all. I revere you to the bottom of my heart. And other women and my mommy. Mommy, I thank you. My family. My grandkids. Grandkids? Yeah, thank you.
'Thank you to my beautiful cast. Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me new life in this show. And to all the Latinas who are looking at me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights. Thank you! Thank you. Gracias.'

She said: 'Cosmo, you are the most hon nest and truthful and no B.S. Actor I know and you made me give my 120%. Lastly, thank you to my team and thank you to my family. Mom, I love you. You are the reason I'm here. You showed me stoicism and that's how I was able to portray it. This is to all the women who expect nothing and continue to be an example for everyone. Thank you so much.'
In the series Anna portrays Toda Mariko who is an intelligent highborn woman with strong loyalty to Lord Yoshii Toranaga. She is a Catholic convert who serves as a translator between Toranaga and the aforementioned Pilot Major John Blackthorne.

Thank you so much to my agents. Thank you so frankly butler and Alice and everyone. All that you are and all that you do. All my friends and family that I love more than anything.'
The talented actress concluded her speech by thanking Gadd whose story the limited series is based on.
She said: 'My biggest thanks has to go to Mr. Richard Gadd. I tried so many times to put into words what working on Baby Reindeer meant to me, and I fail every time, so I'm going to sing. No imagine. I'll keep it simple and just say thank you for trusting me to be your Martha.
'I will never ever forget her or you or this. It really means a lot. Thank you, reindeer, and thank you for this. I'm thrilled. Thank you.'

During his acceptance speech he praised one of his fellow nominees profusely as he said: 'You're all crazy, honestly. Thank you. Thank you so much. Honestly, I wasn't expecting this one at all, and I didn't prepare. I'm not Jon Hamm. I'm your biggest fan, as I told you last night over and over again. Thank you.
'Thank you to the directors, Veronica and Josephine. Thanks to all the people I mentioned previously as well. I'd like to thank my mom and dad, a glaring omission from the previous one as well. They're the best. We've had trying times as a family and they have been there for me, a constant course of love and support. They never ever told me what I needed to do with my life and they never told me what I needed to be. I think that's the greatest gift a parent can give a child. They always said follow your heart and the rest will fall into place. I think that's good advice. Follow your heart and the rest will fall into place. Thank you.'
For the Writing For A Limited Or Anthology Series categories prize he won over Charlie Brooker – Black Mirror, Noah Hawley – Fargo. Ron Nyswaner – Fellow Travelers, Steven Zaillian – Ripley, and Issa López – True Detective: Night Country.

'Look, ten years ago, I was down and out, right? I never ever thought I would get my life together. I never thought I would be able to rectify myself and get myself back on my feet again. Here I am just a decade later picking up one of the biggest awards in television, yeah. Now, I don't mean that -- I don't mean that to sound arrogant. I mean that for anyone going through a difficult time right now to persevere. I don't know much about this life. But I do know nothing lasts forever. And no matter how bad it gets, it always gets better. If you are struggling, keep Keep going. And I promise you things will be okay. Thank you so much for this award.'
He finished the trifecta of his acceptance speeches with the top honor Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series which beat triumphed over Fargo, Lessons in Chemistry, Ripley, and True Detective: Night Country.
Gadd said: 'Yeah. Thank you so much. This is unbelievable. Let me introduce it to everyone. To our wonderful directors, wonderful cast and director. Amazing cast. I can't believe I forgot to thank you guys. Look, you know, I know the industry is in a slump right now, and I know that it might force or put pressure on networks and stuff to tighten the pursestrings and broaden the slate. But I do believe no slump was ever broken without willingness to take risks. I think if "Baby reindeer" has proved anything is that there is no net formula to this.
'You don't need big stars, long-running series to have a hit. Really, really, the only constant across any success in television is good story telling. Good story telling that speaks to our times. So take risks, push boundaries, explore the uncomfortable, dare to fail in order to achieve. Thanks so much for this award.'
Baby Reindeer follows writer and performer Gadd's warped relationship with a female stalker and the impact it has on him as he is ultimately forced to face a deep, dark buried trauma.

And our incredible, incredible Icelandic crew and our cast. Gosh, I love you guys all so much from all over the world, but especially my partner in crime Kailey Reese. Thank you. I know.
'I could talk fast, man. I could talk fast. Mostly the indigenous people and the inuit people of north Alaska that just told us our stories and allowed us to listen and that was just a blessing. It was love, love, love. And when you feel that, something amazing happens. It is deep and wonderful, and it is older than this place and this time. And that's just the message, which is love and work equals art.'
She concluded her speech by recognizing her children and wife Alexandra Hedison.
She said: 'To my boys, Charlie and kit, remember that. And the love of my life, my wife. Thank you so much. Thank you. Cheers!'

I know where babies come from.

John Oliver made for one of the most memorable moments on Sunday when he paid memorial to his late dog, persisting with his tribute as organizers tried to play him off the stage.
The Last Week Tonight with John Oliver star, 47, was accepting the honors for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series in Los Angeles at the Peacock Theater when he referenced his late pet.
'We had the most fantastic dog,' the U.K.-born HBO host said. 'She was at my wedding. She got us through a pandemic. She was with us through two pregnancies.'
Producers ordered the playing of music to cue Oliver to wrap up his emotional speech, but he didn't cease with the moving memorial.
'Perfect choice of music! We had to say goodbye to her,' Oliver said, adding 'F**k you!' to the musical director for the interruption.
Oliver added, 'I feel like Sarah McLachlan right now.'
He said of his late pet: 'She was an amazing dog, and this isn't just for her. It's for all dogs! All dogs. You're very good girls, very good boys. You all deserve a treat.'
At that point, Oliver - a 30-time Emmy winner - was finished and said, 'Play me off now!'
There was also some more controversy as The Traitors' victory compelled the cast of a competing reality series to walk out of the Peacock Theater.
The Peacock series was named Outstanding Reality Competition Program, besting other nominated shows including The Amazing Race, RuPaul's Drag Race, The Voice and Top Chef.
In addition, the show's host Alan Cumming was also named Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program, besting Survivor's Jeff Probst, Top Chef's Kristen Kish, RuPaul's Drag Race's RuPaul and Shark Tank personalities Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Kevin O'Leary, Barbara Corcoran, Robert Herjavec and Daymond John.
The program received two other nominations: Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program (for director Ben Archard) and Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program for photography directors Siggi Rosen-Rawlings and Matt Wright.
There appeared to be a bit of tension after the Outstanding Reality Competition Program winner was announced, according to a journalist in attendance at the award show.
'After the category was announced the team from Drag Race (including all the queens) cleared out and headed to the lobby,' a tweet from The Hollywood Reporter's senior staff writer Chris Gardner read.
It was accompanied by a clip of the cast of Drag Race - who appeared last week at the MTV VMAs - heading for the exits after the announcement.
The tweet itself received a series of divisive responses in the comment thread, with Drag Race's Plane Jane saying that the exit was not intended as a slight to The Traitors team, but rather an opportune moment for refreshments.
'It was a commercial break and the girls wanted a drink,' Plane Jane said. 'We all stayed until the end of the ceremony.'
The cast's Amanda Tori Meating added that the moment allowed the show's cast to use the restroom.
'It was a commercial break are we allowed to go p*** girl' the season 16 contestant said.
Famous father and son duo Eugene and Dan Levy kicked off the event as co-hosts.
The duo had some hilarious quips as they teamed up for the first time since they were on critically acclaimed sitcom Schitt's Creek.
Before the event, television's biggest stars glammed it up on the red carpet outside of the Peacock Theatre.
