  • Luke Littler was Googled more than any other athlete in the UK across this year
  • He beats the likes of King Charles, Keir Starmer, and Alan Hansen in searches
  • Olympic boxer Imane Khelif was the most-searched-for athlete across the globe

Luke Littler was Googled more than any other sports star in the UK in 2024.

The 17-year-old also was the third-most searched-for person of the year, only losing out to Kate Middleton and Donald Trump.

It comes after his extraordinary run to the World Darts Championship final before he went on to win the Premier League Darts title, the Grand Slam of Darts, and the World Series Finals.

Littler has also had a high-profile relationship and break-up with Eloise Milburn, moved his parents into a Warrington mansion, befriended Sir Alex Ferguson and James Maddison, and gone viral for eating kebabs.

Keir Starmer and Imane Khelif round off the top five most searched people in the UK, according to Google's 'Year in Search 2024' release. King Charles sauntered to seventh, coming behind Liverpool legend Alan Hansen, who was hospitalised with a serious illness but discharged earlier this year.

'To be recognised in two Year in Search lists is a huge honour,' said Littler.

'It has been an amazing year for me personally, and for the sport of darts as a whole. I cannot quite believe I am trending higher than both the Prime Minister and the King in the 'people' category.

'In a year of such great sporting achievements, it is a proud moment for me to be the top trending athlete in 2024.

According to Google's analysis, the top-five searched athletes in the UK this year have been Littler, Spain starlet Lamine Yamal, Simone Biles, Jude Bellingham, and Adam Peaty.

It is not explained how Khelif - who controversially won a women's Olympic boxing gold - is the fifth-most-searched person overall in the UK, but not even listed in the top 10 for athletes.

The boxer, who was at the centre of a gender eligibility row, was the most Googled athlete globally ahead of Mike Tyson, Yamal, Biles, and Jake Paul.

Littler was the only darts star to make it into the top 10 athletes, while there were five footballers.

Alongside Yamal and Bellingham, Ollie Watkins (seventh), Cole Palmer (ninth), and Euro 2024 winner Nico Williams (10th) squeezed into the top 10.

There was also lots of attention on Anthony Joshua, who lost his IBF world heavyweight title fight to Daniel Dubois, and on Sir Chris Hoy, the six-time Olympic medallist who in October revealed his terminal prostate cancer diagnosis.

No British sports clubs made it into the top 10 searched globally, with baseball teams the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers winning out in that department.

Littler will hope to launch his assault on the global rankings with victory in the upcoming World Darts Championship, which gets underway on December 15.

He made a remarkable run to the final in his debut appearance in the 2023-24 edition, but lost to Luke Humphries in the final in January.

They could clash in the semi-finals this time due to the nature of the draw.

It has been a huge year for Littler, whose darting antics have seen him pocket more than £1million in earnings and made him a household name.

The youngest player ever to win a DPC Darts title is also in the running for the BBC's Sports Personality of the Year Award.

He will compete with Bellingham, 800m gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson, England's record Test run scorer Joe Root, 30-time para-cycling medallist Sarah Storey, and Olympic and world champion triathlete Alex Yee.

'This is MADDDD. First young sports personality and now sports personality of the year. Huge thank you to BBC Sport for nominating me – never thought I would be saying that,' said Littler.

The BBC's Sports Personality of the Year programme will have an all-female presenting line-up for the first time ever after Gary Lineker's exit from the event.

Lineker, 63, will not be replaced as co-host of the sports awards on December 17, the corporation reportedly confirmed.

It will instead be shown by Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott.

For years, Lineker co-hosted the show with Balding and Logan. Scott became the fourth presenter in 2020.

Director of BBC Sport, Alex Kay-Jelski, described 2024 as a 'thrilling and emotional year of amazing sport'.

The annual sports awards will be held on December 17 in MediaCityUK, Salford.
