An up-and-coming Australian Rules footballer has given up his sporting dreams to become a reality TV star. 

Earlier this week, North Melbourne rookie Tom Wilkinson quit the AFL and signed up as a contestant on The Amazing Race Australia.

Tom, 23, will be joined on the Channel 10 show by fellow footy player Tyler Roos, who is the son of AFL veteran Paul Roos.

According to AFL.com.au, best friends Tom and Tyler will fly to a secret location on Thursday to begin filming The Amazing Race.

Tom reportedly played his final game for North's VFL side on Saturday.

It is understood that he had approached North Melbourne officials earlier this month about his possible career move.   

Friends: Tom and Tyler will take on several other teams in challenges spanning various countries. If they win, they will receive a $250,000 cash prize
