Such early hope for England soon turned into frustration with Australia batsman Steve Smith returning with a brilliant century at Edgbaston during day one of the Ashes.
Joe Root's men had Australia on the ropes at 122 for eight but Smith went on to record a courageous 144, while Peter Siddle made 44 before being caught by Jos Buttler off the bowling of Moeen Ali.
