Greek authorities are trying to piece together the mysterious death of an Australian Instagram model whose body was found on a yacht.

Sinead McNamara, 20, from Port Macquarie in northern New South Wales, had been working as a crew member on the Mayan Queen IV for four months.

The luxury yacht is owned by Mexican billionaire businessman Alberto Bailleres, who chairs Mexico's second largest mining company and is worth $9.6billion.

 Reports from local media indicate that Mr Bailleres left the boat on Tuesday, which was anchored at the island of Kefalonia

Ms McNamara's body was found on the back of the boat on Thursday and was transferred to hospital in Athens, Kefalonian Mantata reported.

Despite desperate attempts from crew members and emergency services, local reports claim the 20-year-old died on the way to hospital. 

The luxury yacht was due to depart Kefalonia on Sunday but has been ordered to remain at the port for ongoing investigations. 

An autopsy has been ordered by Greek authorities to identify the cause of death, In Kefalonia reported.

Few details on the death of the 20-year-old have been released, but the family believes Ms McNamara died in a boating accident, The Daily Telegraph reported.
