Labour leadership hopeful Lisa Nandy will take aim at party Remainers today for failing to stand up for Britain as she sets out to woo disaffected party members in former northern heartlands.

The Wigan MP, 40, will use a speech in London to criticise the pro-Brexit wing of the party for paying 'lip service' to the party's internationalist history by being too focused on the EU.

In what will be seen as a swipe at Remain-supporting challengers for the leadership including Sir Keir Starmer and Emily Thornberry she said that the campaign to stay in the EU failed to talk up the nation.

She will say: 'For Labour, internationalism has become just about being in the EU.

'One of the problems with the referendum was that there was no story about our place in the world.

'They said we were a small nation with a proud history of punching above our weight.

'We said, we'll cut your mobile phone roaming charges.'
