A private archaeology firm believes it has discovered 44 African American graves which were left behind when a Florida cemetery was moved more than 60 years ago.
Ground-penetrating radar was used to detect the 'grave-like anomalies' under the disused asphalt area owned by the Clearwater and Pinellas County School District.
In Friday's report by Cardno, the firm hired by the school district, it said the graves were between two and six feet below the surface. It is the third time since August that a forgotten African American cemetery has been discovered in the Tampa Bay area.
In the latest find, officials say the original cemetery was moved in 1954 but that some graves were left behind.
Officials are referring to it as the 'North Greenwood Cemetery,' because its historic name remains unknown.
