Spanish government ships strayed into British waters surrounding Gibraltar more than 600 times last year, prompting fears over the future of the Rock.

Figures released by the UK government point to an increase in intrusions of 39 per cent over the past year.

The increase have proved to be a continuing source of tension between London and Madrid, which lays claim to the strategically important territory, denied by the UK.
