Black Friday has exploded into a worldwide celebration of consumption, with savvy shoppers making the most of a cut-price pre-Christmas bargain bonanza.
Prices are cut for 24 hours on Friday, November 23, in an attempt to get shoppers splashing the cash.
The day originated in the US and earned its name as the day shops "move into the black" – meaning they can cover their costs.
However many retailers have started spreading their deals over longer periods, with some sales lasting two weeks.
Customers sometimes queue for hours or even days to get first choice on the best bargains.
And Black Friday has earned notoriety with events descending into violence, with distressed shoppers angrily arguing over appliances.
Some stores preview the sale items helping people plan for the big day.
Experts advise shoppers to prepare for Black Friday by targeting what you want before the sales start - saving time, effort and unnecessary spending.
