Ireland coach Joe Schmidt has revealed World Rugby admitted there were three incorrect offside calls given against his side during their shock 19-12 World Cup Pool A defeat by Japan.

Referee Angus Gardner, whom Schmidt had expressed concerns about in the build-up, was in charge although assistant referee Jerome Garces was blamed for two of the mistakes. 

Garces is officiating Ireland's third pool game against Russia on Thursday, and Schmidt couldn't hisde his frustration.

Schmidt said: 'We certainly learned that we're capable. In that first 20 minutes, to be 12-3 up, I think we demonstrated that. We did put ourselves on the back foot - and partly went onto the back foot.

'We were penalised for offside four times and we've now got the feedback that three of those were incorrect
