Texas deputy is shot dead during traffic stop after man opens fire with semiautomatic rifle before fleeing across state line A man was arrested for the shooting death of a sheriff's deputy in Texas who was fired upon six times with a semiautomatic rifle during a traffic stop early Tuesday Gregory Newson, 45, was arrested for the slaying after he allegedly fled and led authorities on a high speed chase from Panola County, Texas, into Louisiana After the hour-long chase, Newson is alleged to have crashed his SUV and continued on foot until a K9 unit apprehended him in Shreveport, where he lives He was charged with capital and faces the death penalty if convicted for the shooting death of the deputy, who worked for Panola County  The deputy was idenitified as Panola County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Dickerson, a married father of two girls who served on the force for eight years Dickerson already was heralded a hero when he was one of three deputies who helped save a woman from a burning home in December 2017

A sheriff's deputy was fatally shot during a traffic stop in East Texas early Tuesday by a man authorities say fired a semiautomatic rifle six times at the officer before fleeing across state lines.

Gregory Newson, 45, was arrested for the slaying after he allegedly fled the scene in Panola County and led officers on a high speed chase into Louisiana after the 2 a.m. shooting, authorities said.

Newson was apprehended when he crashed his sports utility vehicle after the hour-long pursuit, continued on foot and was bitten by a police dog that caught up to him in Shreveport, where he lives, reports KSLA.
