Gary Oldman collects award for Darkest Hour

He has been acclaimed by critics for his performance as the former Prime Minister in the movie, Darkest Hour - making him a hot contender for 's upcoming award season. 

And Gary Oldman started 2018 with a bang as he scooped up the Desert Palm Achievement Award for the historical drama at the 29th annual Palm Springs Film Festival at the Palm Springs Convention Enter on Tuesday night. 

The British actor, 59, picked up the award for his portrayal of Winston Churchill by presenter Peter Fonda, before enjoying a celebratory kiss with his wife Gisele Schmidt.

Gary looked humbled as he posed with his award alongside Peter, 77 - who also looked thrilled for his pal's success. 

The London born star looked undeniably handsome as he made a style statement in a slick purple suit with a black collar, paired with a snazzy bow-tie. 

Gary's wife Gisele, who he wed in 2017, was also keen on celebrating with him as they puckered up for a passionate kiss. 

The brunette looked striking in a flowing black gown as she locked lips with her husband.

It is set to be an exciting time for Gary, who recently admitted he was 'amazed and flattered' by his nomination at Golden Globes, which will take place on January 7.          

After receiving the happy news in December, Gary said: 'I am amazed, flattered and very proud of my first Golden Globe nomination. I am also honoured to find myself in such company as I am a serious admirer of all the work of all the other nominees.'

Darkest Hour stars Gary as British wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill who showcased a jaw-dropping transformation to play the revered Briton.

Oldman is joined in the historical drama by a stellar cast that includes Kristin as Clementine Churchill, Stephen Dillane as Viscount Halifax, the foreign secretary and Lily James as Churchill's personal secretary Elizabeth Nel.

The Joe Wright directed feature tells the story of how the British establishment reluctantly invited Churchill to replace Neville Chamberlain after he was weakened politically by the ongoing aggression of Adolf Hitler and the failure of his Munich Agreement.
